Decide whether the river or the town is the base
A town base can suit cafés, short walks and several small outings. A riverside property can make sense when the setting and an organised activity are the purpose of the stay. Ask for the map pin rather than relying on “near Jinja” in a description.
Check how you will reach meals and activities, especially after dark. A scenic location can require arranged transport for almost every movement; that may be a welcome retreat or an inconvenience depending on your expectations.
Give each activity its own slot

Ask what the activity price contains
We now have a published operator example in the separate Nile activities guide, including rafting and cruises. Use it to understand the scale and structure of a quote, not as a promise that every company or trip has the same price.
Ask about pickup, meals, equipment, photographs, card charges and the return transfer. Child prices do not automatically establish eligibility; the provider must confirm the age and requirements for the selected activity.
Keep the source visit distinct from rafting
The familiar source-area visit concerns the Victoria Nile’s outlet from Lake Victoria and the historical interpretation around it. Rafting uses an operator’s chosen river section and a separate operational plan. Combining the names does not make them one attraction or one ticket.
For a source-area boat, agree who is operating it, the destination and duration, the passenger arrangements and suitable lifejackets. We have not verified one standard current municipal-plus-boat total, so ask for the line items before leaving.
Discuss suitability before booking an adventure
Tell the provider about age, swimming confidence and relevant health or mobility concerns. Ask about the briefing, equipment fit, support and how someone can decline a particular part of the activity. Read cancellation and weather rules before paying.
Insurance should cover the specific planned activity, not just the country. Review the terms with your insurer. An enthusiastic brochure description is not a substitute for the provider’s current requirements or a personal medical assessment.
Separate water appearance from health advice
Calm or clear-looking water does not establish that swimming is safe. CDC’s Uganda guidance identifies risks from freshwater exposure, while currents, boat traffic and weather create separate physical concerns. Follow current professional advice and the operator’s rules.
Keep a quiet river day quiet if that is what you booked. You do not need to add an improvised swim or a more demanding activity to make the stay worthwhile.

Plan the road connection realistically
A journey from Kampala or Entebbe should use the exact pickup point and Jinja-area destination. Ask the driver to account for current traffic and the final lodge approach. A regional distance or the fastest possible map time is not an appointment guarantee.
For an early activity, staying nearby the previous night can remove much of the uncertainty. For a return flight, protect an appropriate buffer and understand which provider is responsible for each leg.

Leave a day that does not need a ticket
A slow breakfast, a guided town walk or time looking over the river can be the reason to stay longer. Choose a local guide when historical or cultural context matters and agree the price and scope directly. Ask before photographing people.
For a short trip already centred on southwestern gorillas, be honest about the detour. Jinja is worthwhile when the river is a priority. It should not be added simply to make the route look complete on paper.
