Choose the transport for the leg

A city transfer, a national-park circuit and a remote forest approach have different requirements. Ask for the exact pickup, drop-off, vehicle, driver arrangements and baggage capacity before comparing prices.

Entebbe airport and Kampala

Choose the first base according to arrival time and the next departure. Entebbe can reduce the need for a late transfer into Kampala when you have an early flight or simply need sleep. Kampala is useful when city activities are an intentional part of the stay.

Arrange a pickup with a clear meeting point and vehicle identification. Check whether waiting time, parking and any late arrival are included. Avoid a tight same-day chain from an international arrival to a separate safari flight unless the providers explicitly support the connection.

Bwindi by road or air

UWA identifies Kihihi as an air access point for the north of Bwindi and Kisoro for the southern sectors. The final drive remains necessary. Ask the lodge which airstrip and arrival service match your actual permit sector.

A road trip can make sense when you are also visiting Lake Mburo, Queen Elizabeth or Kibale. It is less attractive when most of a short holiday would be spent transferring. Use a full road day where the route calls for it rather than adding a major activity after an uncertain arrival.

What to ask a driver or rental company

Confirm the route is permitted by the hire contract, including any cross-border travel. Ask about insurance excess, roadside assistance, tyre and windscreen cover, recovery in a park and responsibility for fuel. Inspect the spare tyre and seat belts before departure.

With a driver, agree whether fuel, accommodation, meals, park vehicle entry and the driver’s working time are included. Avoid an itinerary that depends on driving deep into the night after a full activity day. The travel advice highlights road risks; daylight transfers are the more cautious planning choice.

Public transport and the final connection

A bus ticket to a town does not deliver you to a remote lodge or a gorilla briefing point. Ask where the service actually terminates, arrange the next vehicle and budget for the last leg. Do not rely on a transfer you have never priced as the reason a route looks cheap.

Keep the departure buffer before an international flight. If a road delay would create a costly missed connection, an extra night near Entebbe is part of the transport plan. Current route-specific fares are quoted by providers; this guide does not invent a universal per-kilometre price.

Keep the handover between providers clear

If one company drives you to an airstrip and another collects you at the destination, save both contacts and confirm who tracks delays. Check the final meeting point with the accommodation. A ticket to the nearest airstrip should not leave the last road transfer to an assumption made by nobody in particular.

Questions & answers

Which airstrip should I use for Bwindi?

UWA describes Kihihi for the northern frontier and Kisoro for southern sectors. Confirm the match with your lodge and permit.

Is a flight the whole transfer?

No. Include airport check-in, any intermediate stops, baggage conditions and the drive from the arrival airstrip.

Can I self-drive?

It may be possible under a suitable rental contract, but assess your experience, road conditions, insurance and recovery support before choosing it.

Should I stay in Entebbe before departure?

Our recommendation is to keep a buffer near the airport when a long road transfer would otherwise connect directly to an international flight.
