Time in the air is not door-to-door time

The flight option includes the trip to the departure airport, check-in, the flight and a potentially significant road transfer to the lodge. UWA’s approximate air duration is useful context but does not describe the whole journey. Ask whether the flight has intermediate stops.

The return needs the same calculation. Do not assume a domestic arrival leaves enough time for an international departure on a separate ticket. Build a buffer that accounts for weather and operational changes, and ask the airline and operator about realistic alternatives.

Choose the airstrip after the sector

Kihihi serves the northern-side access identified by UWA, while Kisoro serves southern sectors. A cheap flight to the wrong gateway can create an awkward road journey and erase much of the time saving.

Give the airline or booking operator the exact sector and lodge. Ask who collects you, how long the final road takes under current conditions and whether the transfer price includes the appropriate vehicle and any required entries. A booking labelled only “Bwindi flight” is incomplete.

When driving adds value

Driving makes sense when the route deliberately includes places such as Kibale, Queen Elizabeth or Lake Mburo. Those stops should have usable activity time, not exist only as names on a long transfer list.

A direct drive from Entebbe or Kampala can be a tiring full day, with the sector and final mountain road determining the finish. Include breaks, daylight and a realistic arrival meal. Avoid scheduling the tracking briefing on the same day as the capital-to-forest road journey.

Compare the real cost

For air travel, add both airport transfers, the fare, luggage needs and the lodge pickup. For road travel, ask whether the vehicle is private or shared and whether driver expenses, fuel and onward availability are included.

A private vehicle cost shared by several travellers behaves differently from per-person flight fares. Conversely, an extra road overnight can change the apparent saving. We have not verified a universal current fare or driver-day rate, so the comparison needs dated quotations.

Protect the permit day

Arrive in the correct area before tracking and confirm the next morning’s meeting point. A permit is a dated activity, not a flexible attraction that simply waits for a late flight.

For either transport choice, keep the trek day free of a tight long transfer afterwards. The duration and effort of tracking are uncertain, and a patient onward plan is more useful than a schedule that assumes the shortest possible walk.

Which choice fits your trip?

Choose flying for a shorter gorilla-focused trip when the correct service, baggage and complete transfer fit. Choose driving for a worthwhile western circuit or when the full quote and pace suit your group.

A mixed route can be sensible: drive through the western parks and fly back, or the reverse. Confirm where the vehicle service ends and what each one-way transfer includes.

Questions & answers

Which airstrip is right for Bwindi?

UWA identifies Kihihi for northern access and Kisoro for southern sectors. Confirm the actual lodge and permit-sector road connection.

Can I fly in on the morning of tracking?

Do not build the trip around that assumption. Arrive beforehand and protect the dated permit from transport uncertainty.

Is flying always quicker overall?

It often reduces the main road segment, but the full calculation includes airport processes and the final road transfer.

Can I drive one way and fly the other?

Yes, if the operator and airline confirm the complete one-way arrangements, luggage and vehicle-service endpoint.
