Start with the permit, not the hotel view
A room described as overlooking Bwindi may be far from the sector printed on your permit. Cross-sector road journeys can be slow and awkward before a morning briefing. Ask the operator to confirm both the permit location and the accommodation-to-briefing transfer in writing.
If dates are flexible, compare permit availability across sectors before committing to a lodge. If the lodge is the priority, find out which sector it sensibly serves and whether a permit is available. Do not assume the operator can later swap sectors without consequences.

Match the direction of travel
Buhoma can suit a route arriving from the Queen Elizabeth and Ishasha side. Southern sectors often fit a Kisoro approach and combinations with Mgahinga or Lake Bunyonyi. Ruhija needs its own route calculation rather than being treated as an automatic midpoint.
These are planning relationships, not fixed driving times. Ask for the exact previous and next overnight stops, current road condition, breaks and final lodge approach. A transfer estimate to “Bwindi” without a sector is incomplete.

Airstrip choice does not finish the journey
UWA identifies Kihihi for the northern side and Kisoro for southern access. Flights reduce a long road segment but leave a meaningful ground transfer. Verify the current operating schedule, baggage and the actual collection.
For Ruhija or any less direct airstrip-to-lodge plan, compare the whole journey rather than choosing the shortest time in the air. Keep arrival before the permit day with enough margin for weather and operational changes.

Difficulty cannot be assigned by a simple ranking
A sector’s general terrain is only part of the trek. The allocated group, the gorillas’ movement, conditions and the route chosen that day influence effort. A seller claiming one sector is always easy is oversimplifying the decision.
Tell the operator and ranger about fitness, mobility or medical concerns in advance. Ask about porter assistance and any other support that can actually be organised. Do not rely on an unconfirmed promise of a short walk when deciding whether to travel.

Tracking and habituation need separate confirmation
Standard tracking and habituation are different permit products. If habituation is the purpose, confirm the current location, availability and specific tariff rather than inferring it from a sector’s reputation.
UWA’s revised regular habituation price takes effect on 1 January 2027. A trip in another period needs the applicable confirmed rate. The sector choice does not remove the need to read effective dates and booking conditions.

Which choice fits your trip?
Choose Buhoma for a well-matched northern circuit, or a southern sector for a well-matched Kisoro-side route, when permits and accommodation align. Choose Ruhija when its particular access and stay serve the trip.
Let the confirmed permit, physical needs and full transfer plan decide together. A sector league table cannot replace those decisions.
Questions & answers
Which sector is easiest?
None can guarantee an easy trek. Terrain, allocation, animal movement and conditions all matter.
Can I sleep in a different sector?
It may be possible but can create a difficult morning transfer. Prefer accommodation that demonstrably serves the booked briefing point.
Which airstrip should I use?
UWA identifies Kihihi for northern access and Kisoro for southern access; confirm the exact sector-to-lodge road leg.
Does every sector offer habituation?
Do not assume so. Book the exact currently available product and location through the required channel.
