What you are choosing

Standard tracking has a defined regulated encounter after the search. The search itself can vary in duration and difficulty, and the animals’ movement determines much of the experience. It is not a fixed-distance guided walk followed by a guaranteed photograph.

Habituation is a separate programme connected with the process of getting gorillas accustomed to appropriate human observation. Confirm the precise current visitor format, time allowance and rules with UWA or the licensed operator. Do not describe it as unlimited time or unrestricted access.

Read the effective date on the price

The February 2026 UWA notice sets the revised regular habituation rate of USD 1,800 for foreign nonresidents from 1 January 2027. It does not make that increase effective in July 2026. The older USD 1,500 document is labelled through June 2026, so a later 2026 booking needs a confirmed payable amount.

At the published 2027 foreign nonresident rates, habituation is USD 1,000 more than regular tracking, calculated from USD 1,800 minus USD 800. That is a permit difference only. Additional nights, transport or a different base can change the whole-trip difference.

Time and fitness

Longer permitted observation does not mean an easier or more comfortable day. Forest conditions, steep ground, rain and the animals’ behaviour still apply. Be candid about fitness and ask how the specific programme works before deciding that more time must be better value.

For either product, keep the afternoon free of a tight long-distance transfer. Prepare water, food as instructed, suitable clothing and camera settings before the briefing. Arrange any available porter support through the proper local process.

Ethics and photographs

Both products require following the ranger’s health, distance and behaviour instructions. Paying more does not buy the right to touch animals or interfere with their movement. If unwell, disclose it rather than concealing symptoms to protect the booking.

Photography depends on light, vegetation and the gorillas’ position. A longer programme may offer more observation time, but it cannot guarantee unobstructed views. Choose it because you value the process and time in the forest, not a promise of superior images.

Availability and cancellation

Ask for the exact date, programme, sector, visitor category and permit confirmation. Foreign nonresident and rest-of-Africa bookings follow UWA’s licensed-operator requirement in the published rules.

Read permit conditions separately from the operator’s room and transport terms. A discount or flexible lodge booking does not establish a flexible permit. The standard low-season tracking offer has its own no-rescheduling condition.

Which choice fits your trip?

Choose standard tracking when the regulated encounter fits your purpose and budget. Choose habituation when you understand and specifically want the extended programme, can meet its demands and have confirmed the correct price and location.

Do not upgrade simply because a longer encounter sounds automatically better. The right product is the one whose real format matches your interests.

Questions & answers

When does the USD 1,800 habituation rate start?

UWA’s published notice says 1 January 2027, not July 2026.

Is habituation easier?

No guarantee is justified. More field time can increase fatigue, and terrain and animal movement vary.

Can I get closer because I pay more?

No. Follow the programme’s ranger-led health, distance and behaviour rules.

Does the USD 600 low-season offer apply to habituation?

Do not assume so. The cited offer concerns standard gorilla tracking under its stated conditions.
