Read the price with its effective date

The permit belongs to a particular visitor category, date and tracking location. A cheaper resident or regional-citizen rate is not a discount that every tourist can choose. Prepare the passport and residence evidence before the reservation is made, and have the operator identify the category used in the quotation.

UWA’s website currently links an older tariff labelled July 2024-June 2026 together with a separate amendment. We show that distinction instead of relabelling the whole older document as a new 2026 tariff. The amendment is clear about its future effective date.

The older tariff has an explicit end date. For a 2026 habituation booking, obtain the applicable charge in writing from UWA. The USD 1,800 increase starts on 1 January 2027, not 1 July 2026. The low-season notice says discounted permits cannot be rescheduled.

Book the permit before the lodge

Start with your dates and the park or Bwindi sector. The published UWA tariff requires foreign non-resident and rest-of-Africa gorilla and chimp permits to be booked through licensed tour operators. UWA’s reservations office can clarify current availability and rules, but do not assume that a direct contact removes this requirement. Request the tracking location, date, traveller details, total charge and payment terms in writing. A package proposal is not evidence that a permit has been secured.

For Bwindi, match the permit sector to your accommodation. A booking near Buhoma is not interchangeable with a permit at Rushaga. Transfers around the forest can be long, and arriving late at the wrong briefing point is a problem a cheap room cannot solve.

Payment and the low-season restriction

UWA’s February 2026 notice suspended the seven-day unpaid reservation window from 1 March 2026. It says operators secure permits on full payment at booking. Ask an intermediary to distinguish its own deposit arrangements from the authority’s permit payment.

The same notice says low-season permits cannot be rescheduled. Do not assume a discounted November permit can move to a December date by paying a small difference. Obtain cancellation and refund terms for the exact permit before buying flights; the operator’s package cancellation policy may add separate conditions.

What the permit includes

The published gorilla tariff includes the guide, park entry for the tracking day and a community contribution. Your vehicle, accommodation, meals, porter, tips and travel insurance are separate unless a package explicitly includes them. Check whether an operator has mistakenly added a second park entry charge for the same activity day.

Tracking and habituation are different products. Habituation involves participation alongside the specialist team, not a private version of the standard trek. Longer permitted time does not guarantee a particular viewing position, easy walking or cooperative animals.

Age, health and planning the day

Confirm the current age and health conditions directly with UWA when booking, especially for a family whose child is close to the minimum age. Tell the guide about mobility limitations before group allocation. An operator’s promise of an “easy gorilla family” should not be treated as a guarantee.

If you develop symptoms of an infectious illness, contact the operator and park before attending the briefing. Great apes are vulnerable to human infections. This page does not promise a medical cancellation refund: obtain the actual written policy. Allow a night near the correct briefing point before tracking and avoid fixing a flight immediately after the trek.

Questions & answers

Is the Uganda gorilla permit USD 800 or USD 600?

UWA publishes USD 800 as the standard foreign non-resident tracking rate. Its February 2026 notice introduces USD 600 tracking permits for April, May and November, with a no-rescheduling condition.

When does habituation become USD 1,800?

The official amendment states 1 January 2027. It does not state 1 July 2026.

Does a permit include the lodge and transport?

No. The published permit includes the park guide, tracking-day entry and community contribution; accommodation, transfers and porter services need separate arrangements.

Can I change a low-season permit date?

The February 2026 notice says low-season permits cannot be rescheduled. Obtain the exact refund and cancellation conditions before paying.
