Book the permit sequence before the hotel sequence

Start with the desired gorilla date and sector, then the chimpanzee activity and reporting point. Check availability through the appropriate licensed operator before locking in a chain of non-refundable accommodation. A permit in southern Bwindi creates different logistics from one in the north.

Ask for the exact permit product. Ordinary tracking and habituation are different activities, and the UWA amendment has different rates and effective dates. A quote should name what has been reserved rather than using “primate experience” as a catch-all.

Use a route that gives each place a purpose

Do not treat Bwindi as one hotel area

Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo serve different parts of the forest. Confirm the actual briefing point and ask the operator to assess the accommodation-to-briefing journey. A property advertised near Bwindi may not be a practical base for your permit.

If flying, align the airstrip with that sector and include the final road transfer. Do not assume the cheapest flight or hotel independently creates the cheapest complete trip.

Protect time in Queen Elizabeth

Decide whether the park is a real stay with planned activities or simply a transit between forest bases. A boat activity and a drive in another part of the park have their own meeting points and travel time. Check where your lodge sits relative to both.

If Ishasha is included, describe it as a separate southern component of the route, not an automatic bonus on every drive through Queen Elizabeth. Wildlife sightings remain uncertain, including any expectation of tree-climbing lions.

Treat transfer estimates as planning ranges

Ask the operator for approximate road time, stops and the final approach to each lodge. Weather, roadworks and local conditions can change the day. A map estimate may omit the slowest section and should not be used to promise a tightly timed afternoon activity.

Keep a long transfer day light. A short scenic stop can fit, but repeated detours add up. A driver should not need to make up lost sightseeing time through unsafe speed or an unnecessarily late arrival.

Keep the fee dates visible

The general UWA tariff available in our research is labelled July 2024-June 2026. The 2026 amendment gives immediate low-season primate discounts and revised regular prices from 1 January 2027. These documents should be read together, with written confirmation for unamended charges beyond the older tariff period.

For each quote, ask which park entries are included in the permit and which activities need separate admission. Do not add or remove a park fee merely because a different primate activity includes it elsewhere.

Use the quieter days well

A free afternoon around the crater lakes or a settled morning after a forest trek can make the route more enjoyable. Ask about local walking access and the physical demands before choosing an outing. Avoid presenting lake swimming as automatically safe; current medical guidance on freshwater exposure matters.

If a group has different interests, a rest day is a useful point to separate activities. Confirm transport and meeting arrangements so that one person’s ambitious walk does not dictate everyone’s departure.

Choose the return before adding another park

Compare the complete drive back with an appropriate domestic flight, including airstrip transfers, luggage and the international connection. The correct answer depends on where the route ends, not simply on whether flying is faster in general.

Protect a buffer before the international flight. If time is tight, remove the least important stop rather than compressing every remaining stay. A western trip is strongest when the fixed permits and the road days work together.
