Arriving in Uganda: Entebbe, Kampala and the first transfer

Choose the first night deliberately

A late international arrival followed by a quiet Entebbe night can simplify the start. Kampala makes sense when city activities, meetings or the onward route justify the transfer. Ask for the exact hotel location and expected pickup arrangements before committing.

If you have a domestic flight on a separate ticket, confirm its departure point and reporting time. An airline schedule does not automatically include the ground transfer or protection after a delayed international arrival.

Use the next move to choose the base

Keep immigration documents accessible

Use Uganda immigration’s official guidance and follow the government’s link to the visa portal. Carry the approval and supporting travel details in a form you can access without mobile data. Names and passport details should match the documents used for travel.

The tourist-visa guidance lists a USD 50 fee plus applicable bank charges. Other visa products have different rules, and an East Africa Tourist Visa needs its own eligibility and itinerary check. Avoid paying a third-party site because it resembles a government page.

Make the airport pickup easy to verify

Ask the accommodation or operator for the meeting point, driver contact, vehicle details and procedure after a delay. Save that information before flying. Confirm a driver through the contact you already have rather than relying solely on someone approaching you in arrivals.

For a late arrival, an arranged transfer can reduce the number of decisions made while tired. Confirm whether the quoted amount includes waiting, luggage and the exact hotel, especially if the accommodation is outside the usual service area.

Handle cash and a SIM before a remote transfer

Separate the money required immediately from the larger balances already paid to an operator. Ask whether the next accommodation or activity accepts a card, local cash or mobile money. Keep more than one payment option where practical and avoid carrying all documents and funds together.

Use an authorised network outlet for a SIM, bring the required identification and test the service before leaving. Ask which registration and mobile-money services are available for your visitor status. We do not publish an unverified universal SIM or data price.

Plan one manageable city activity

A first Kampala day is easier when it has one geographical focus rather than attractions scattered across the city. Ask a trusted local guide or your accommodation to check current access and transport. Leave time for meals and the practical tasks of starting the trip.

Kasubi Tombs provides one possible heritage focus, with UNESCO’s account useful as historical background. Current visitor arrangements and fees need separate confirmation; a World Heritage description is not an opening-hours notice.

Use specific safety advice

Read the current advisory and discuss your actual neighbourhood and route with the host. A reassuring statement about a whole city does not settle the safest way to travel after dark. Prefer a trusted vehicle for unfamiliar nighttime journeys.

Road travel deserves attention throughout the trip. Avoid a schedule that relies on an exhausted driver or a late arrival after an overloaded sightseeing day. If considering a motorcycle taxi, weigh the road and protective-equipment risks rather than treating speed through traffic as the only criterion.

Prepare the onward handover

Reconfirm the next day’s meeting point, departure time and what is included in the transfer. Keep the permit date, sector and lodge location together if travelling towards Bwindi. For a flight, check the current luggage rules before packing a large hard case.

Tell the next host how you will arrive and who will notify them if delayed. A clear handover between airport, driver, airline and accommodation is a small piece of planning that prevents a surprising number of avoidable problems.
