Match the payment method to the expense

A quotation in US dollars does not mean every part of the trip should be paid in dollar notes. Ask whether the amount is payable in USD, converted to UGX at an agreed rate or settled through a payment link. Establish any card surcharge before authorising the transaction.

How much cash to carry

Work from unpaid expenses rather than a universal “cash per safari day” figure. List meals outside your booking, locally paid activities, porter arrangements, discretionary tips and a contingency for a failed card terminal. Subtract costs already paid and ask your accommodation which nearby facilities actually work.

Keep the main reserve separately from the money used during the day. Avoid counting a large amount in public, and decline unsolicited help at an ATM. An ATM withdrawal limit, bank fee and exchange rate are separate factors; inspect your own bank’s terms rather than assuming the machine’s displayed rate is the complete cost.

Mobile money for a visitor

MTN and Airtel provide mobile services in Uganda, but a tourist should confirm the current requirements for opening a wallet in their own name. Bring the original passport to an authorised shop and ask staff to complete the necessary verification. We have not confirmed a universal visitor-wallet fee or transaction limit.

Before leaving the shop, test a small transaction and understand how to top up, pay a merchant and withdraw any remaining balance. A data-only international eSIM does not automatically give you a local mobile-money account. Protect the PIN and review the recipient name before approving a payment.

Tips, porters and invoices

Treat tips as discretionary unless the quote explicitly lists a service charge. Ask whether a lodge pools tips and whether guides or porters are paid separately. A suggested tip in an itinerary is an editorial suggestion, not a government fee. We do not publish a universal mandatory tipping rate.

For permits and deposits, keep the original invoice and receipt, not just a message saying payment was received. Confirm the payee matches the organisation or licensed operator you intended to use. If bank details change unexpectedly, verify through a known official contact before sending money.

Before heading to a remote lodge

Settle the payment plan while you still have reliable connectivity. Save receipts and booking details offline, tell your bank if required and keep its official support number accessible. The final useful check is specific: “Can I pay my outstanding balance by this card at this lodge on this date?”

Avoid exchanging money with an unverified street contact simply because the offered rate looks better. Compare a licensed exchange service or bank and obtain a receipt. Do not carry an unnecessary reserve of foreign currency when the known expenses can be settled in advance.

Questions & answers

Can I pay for everything by card?

Do not assume so. Agree the method for each major expense and keep UGX cash for smaller purchases and a separate backup.

Do I need US dollars?

Only if a specific booking requires them. A USD quote may also be payable electronically or in UGX at an agreed conversion.

How much should I tip?

There is no universal official tourist tipping tariff. Ask about local arrangements and treat tips as discretionary unless a service charge is disclosed.

Does an eSIM give me mobile money?

Not automatically. A data plan, local phone number and registered mobile-money wallet are different services.
