Choose the service you need

Separate your needs into internet access, local calls, banking messages and mobile money. A cheap data bundle can be the wrong purchase if your transfer provider needs to call a local number or your bank sends codes to your home SIM.

Register and test before you leave

Bring the original passport and use an authorised shop. Confirm the line is in your own name, the correct bundle has been activated and the expiry is understood. Do not accept an already-registered stranger’s SIM as a shortcut.

Turn off Wi-Fi and test mobile data, an outgoing call if included, and the account balance. If mobile money is part of the plan, ask whether it needs a separate registration step. Keep the receipt and the provider’s support instructions.

Coverage in parks and forests

Treat a lodge’s connectivity claim as a question to clarify: does Wi-Fi work in the room or only in the common area, is it powered all day, and can it support a call rather than just messages? Mobile coverage can change across a valley or behind a forested ridge.

Ask which network currently works at your named lodge. This is more useful than a country-wide assertion that one provider is always best. Download maps, permits and meeting instructions before travelling, and agree a fallback meeting point that does not depend on a last-minute message.

Control cost and battery use

Compare bundles by total usable data and validity, not only the largest number in the advert. Check whether a promotional allowance works only at certain times or in selected apps. Turn off automatic cloud-photo uploads and app updates on mobile data.

Bring a power bank within your airline’s current carriage rules. Keep home-number roaming settings deliberate: a phone with two SIMs can still generate charges if calls, data switching or voicemail are configured unexpectedly.

If you need to work during the trip

Schedule important calls from a property that has confirmed reliable power and connectivity for the specific room or workspace. Ask about an alternative connection and how outages are handled. A forest lodge should not be the untested location for a critical meeting.

Keep account recovery codes somewhere secure and avoid sharing banking codes or mobile-money PINs with someone offering technical help. Public Wi-Fi is convenient for routine browsing, but it is not a reason to disable the normal security protections on your device.

Prepare for account verification away from town

Check how your bank and other essential accounts send verification codes before replacing or disabling your usual SIM. Keep the original card secure, review roaming settings and download the documents needed offline. Tell the operator which number will reach you locally and provide an alternative contact method for times when mobile data is unavailable.

Questions & answers

Which network is best in Bwindi?

Ask your named lodge which network currently works there. A national coverage claim cannot establish reception at a particular room or valley.

Can I use an international eSIM?

If your device and chosen plan support Uganda, yes. Check whether it is data-only and whether tethering is included.

How much is a gigabyte?

A current comparable bundle tariff was not confirmed. Use the operator’s live prices and compare allowance, validity and restrictions.

Should I keep permits offline?

Yes. Save the approval documents, booking details and meeting instructions before entering areas with uncertain connectivity.
