A first week in Uganda: choose one direction and go deeper
A first itinerary that gives Kampala enough time, leaves room for long distances and resists the urge to see everything.
Uganda rewards a route with breathing room. The distances on a map do not always describe the day on the road, and the best moments are often the ones that appear between the planned stops. Treat the first week as a beginning, not a greatest-hits tour.
Use Kampala as a real first chapter
Arrive, rest and give the city time to become more than a transfer point. Start with one clear plan per day, a trusted local recommendation and a little room to revise the rest of the route.
Travel in one direction
For a short visit, choose either an eastern route shaped by water and movement, or a western route shaped by highlands and wildlife. One coherent arc makes the journey calmer and makes transport easier to manage.
Keep the final night simple
Bring the last night back close to the airport or your departure point. It protects the itinerary from the one delay you cannot predict and makes the return feel less abrupt.
