Route and travel time

Transfer plan: check against the exact accommodation
LegDistance or geographic referenceTime to allow
Entebbe / Kampala → Lake MburoUWA gives about 228 km from Kampala; add the Entebbe starting leg and exact lodge approachEditorial allowance 4-6 hours from the airport region
Lake Mburo → BwindiSector-specific road route; obtain actual kilometres and final track conditionsEditorial allowance 5-7 hours
Bwindi → BunyonyiStrongly dependent on the booked sector and propertyEditorial allowance 2-5 hours
Bunyonyi → EntebbeA full southwest-to-airport-region road stageEditorial allowance 8-10 hours with breaks

Road-time ranges are editorial planning allowances including ordinary breaks, not measured current traffic. Where an official distance is available it is identified; other distances need confirmation for the chosen gate and lodge. Safari driving is additional.

Book these decisions first

Secure the actual gorilla date and sector through the required licensed-operator channel before booking the route. If the sector makes Bunyonyi an awkward detour, replace the lake night with more time near the forest.

The sample uses the regular USD 800 permit. An eligible April, May or November USD 600 permit changes that line by USD 200, but its no-rescheduling condition matters. Park entry, boat and walking products outside tracking require their own confirmation.

Day 1: Arrive in Entebbe

Arrange the airport transfer and keep the rest of the day quiet. Confirm the permit date and sector, passport details and next morning’s driver. A late international arrival should not trigger an immediate long road journey.

Day 2: Travel to Lake Mburo

Use the confirmed gate and lodge approach. Take an afternoon activity only if the transfer leaves useful time. If the purpose is simply breaking the drive, be clear whether the overnight is inside the park and what entry is charged.

Day 3: Continue to the booked Bwindi sector

Allow the road and final mountain approach their own day. Reach the accommodation before the tracking day and confirm the briefing-point transfer. Prepare documents, clothing, food and any porter arrangements in the evening.

Day 4: Gorilla tracking

Follow the ranger’s briefing and health instructions, keeping the search duration flexible. Do not schedule a long transfer immediately afterwards. Use the afternoon for recovery and a meal at the same base.

Day 5: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

Use a sector-specific route and keep the lake programme light. Choose a mainland or island base with the final boat transfer confirmed. Rest is the purpose; an optional outing should not become another demanding fixed appointment.

Day 6: Return to Entebbe

This is a long road day with breaks. Leave early enough for daylight and a relaxed arrival. Keep the final Entebbe night instead of attaching an international flight directly to the southwest transfer.

Day 7: Departure

Arrange the airport transfer with the airline’s check-in margin. Any short local activity must preserve that buffer and the ability to collect stored luggage.

A transparent budget you can adapt

The calculation below is an illustrative planning scenario for two adults sharing a room and a private road vehicle. Room, food and vehicle amounts are explicit assumptions chosen to make the arithmetic visible, not current supplier prices or a quote. Replace them with dated offers before booking.

Only the park and permit figures identified as published tariffs are sourced prices. Count paid access periods from the actual entry and exit times; the sample below does not establish how many tickets your operator will charge. Do not pay for a fee twice if it is already included in a package.

How to adapt the route

For less driving, compare a confirmed flight to the correct Bwindi airstrip and back, then rebuild the route around the forest and Entebbe. The air fare and last transfers replace the road assumption; they are not included in it.

For a slower road trip, add a night rather than squeezing a second primate destination into the week. Kibale needs its own permit day and a different western sequence.

Questions & answers

Is this a bookable package?

No. It is an editorial route with explicit budget assumptions. Obtain dated transport, accommodation and activity confirmations from providers.

Are the road times guaranteed?

No. The exact gate, lodge, traffic, weather and stops determine the journey. Keep daylight and a buffer before fixed departures.

Does the subtotal include every cost?

No. Read the exclusions and replace every assumed amount with a quote. Check whether a package already includes park or permit lines.

Should I add another destination?

Only after the actual transfers still leave worthwhile time at each base. Removing a stop is often the simplest way to protect the pace.
