The tariff and the date

Kibale tracking, Kibale habituation and Kyambura Gorge tracking are separate activities. An itinerary describing a “chimp permit” should name the forest, experience and date. The published amendment changes several prices at once, making an undated screenshot particularly easy to misread.

UWA separately introduced low-season chimpanzee tracking at USD 200 for foreign non-residents and USD 150 for foreign residents in April, May and November. Ask UWA to confirm the site, booking date and applicability when buying. Budongo is not priced by this table.

Kibale: choose tracking or habituation

Standard tracking is the more straightforward choice if chimpanzees are one part of a larger Uganda circuit. Habituation is appropriate when you want the forest experience to occupy more of the day and can accept a less predictable schedule. Neither option guarantees an unobstructed portrait: the animals can move quickly or remain high in the canopy.

The older published tariff includes park entry for Kibale tracking and habituation. Ask the operator to show permit, transfer and accommodation as separate lines. Confirm the current inclusion for your travel date before using an old tariff to dispute an invoice.

Low-season bookings

The February 2026 notice introduces chimpanzee tracking permits at USD 200 for foreign non-residents and USD 150 for foreign residents in April, May and November. The notice does not provide a detailed site-by-site low-season table. Ask UWA which activity your reservation covers and how the discount interacts with the January 2027 changes.

The notice says low-season permits cannot be rescheduled. A cheaper forest permit is useful only if the rest of the trip can remain on the booked dates.

Kyambura and Budongo are different decisions

Kyambura is naturally considered on a Queen Elizabeth route. Its gorge landscape and location can make sense even if Kibale would offer a more focused primate stop. The standard published Kyambura tracking fee excludes park entry, unlike the older Kibale inclusion. Check the complete activity cost rather than comparing the permit line alone.

Budongo fits a Murchison Falls itinerary. We have not confirmed a current official Budongo tariff and therefore do not publish the USD 130 figure circulated in draft plans as a verified rate. Obtain a written quote from the activity provider stating permit, guide, conservation charge and transfer inclusions.

How to prepare

Book the actual tracking departure, then choose accommodation that reaches its briefing point reliably. Carry rain protection, walking footwear and a dry bag for the camera. Tell the guide if you are ill; close contact with primates is not an appropriate reason to ignore an infection.

Ask about minimum age, available departure times and cancellation terms for the named site. These conditions should come from the provider of that activity. A rule copied from a gorilla trek, or from a different chimpanzee forest, is not sufficient.

Keep the forest booking identifiable

Save the permit product, date, reporting point and operator contact together. A lodge reservation near the forest is not proof that the tracking activity is booked. Ask who will provide the final confirmation and how you will be informed if the authority changes the meeting arrangements.

Questions & answers

Is Kibale tracking USD 250 or USD 300?

USD 250 appears in UWA’s July 2024-June 2026 tariff. The announced regular foreign non-resident rate from 1 January 2027 is USD 300. Confirm your exact 2026 booking against UWA’s current quotation.

Is park entry included?

The older UWA tariff includes park entry for Kibale tracking, but excludes it for Kyambura. Check that the same conditions apply to your date.

How much does Budongo cost?

A current official Budongo price was not confirmed during this review. Request the provider’s written tariff rather than using an unsupported USD 130 figure.

Can I visit Kibale instead of seeing gorillas?

Yes, but it is a different wildlife experience involving chimpanzees. Choose it on its own merits rather than expecting a cheaper version of a gorilla encounter.
