The day in practical stages
Your confirmed permit and briefing location determine the morning. Ask your accommodation to arrange breakfast, drinking water, a packed meal where appropriate and the transfer the evening before. Keep your passport and permit details ready.
| Stage | What happens | Your preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Previous evening | Confirm sector, transfer and briefing instructions | Charge equipment; pack waterproof protection |
| Morning briefing | Document checks, group allocation and rules | Describe mobility or health concerns honestly |
| Forest approach | Guided search using current tracking information | Expect mud, roots, slopes and stops |
| Encounter | Follow the ranger’s distance and behaviour instructions | Keep food away; do not force a photograph |
| Return | Walk back and transfer to your accommodation | Keep the rest of the day flexible |

How hard is the walking?
The difficulty is determined by the animals’ location, terrain and weather on the day. A sector reputation cannot promise a short walk. Descending a steep slope can be demanding even when the outward walk felt easy, and altitude or humidity can change how the effort feels.
Give the operator specific information about your walking ability before booking. Ask about practical support and any available assisted arrangements directly with the park. Do not conceal a limitation and rely on a guide to solve it during the briefing.
Porters and equipment
Ask where authorised porters are engaged and what their current fee covers. We have not confirmed a universal porter price, so carry the amount advised for your booking rather than relying on an old blog figure. Hiring a porter can reduce the load you carry, but it does not remove the need to walk safely.
Use footwear with reliable grip, long trousers and a rain layer. Pack camera equipment and documents inside waterproof protection. Bring only the equipment you will use; changing lenses while balancing on a muddy slope is less convenient than it sounds. Ask your lodge to pack food securely and follow the ranger’s instructions on when it may be eaten.

Behaviour around gorillas
Follow the current park briefing on separation, masks, photography and movement. Keep voices low, leave the animals an escape route and let the ranger respond if a gorilla approaches. Never reach out to touch an animal or step closer because a phone has a wide-angle lens.
Tell the park if you have symptoms of an infectious illness before attending. People and great apes can transmit infections. A trip investment is not a reason to hide symptoms; ask about the applicable permit policy without assuming an automatic refund.

What to schedule afterwards
Leave the afternoon free for the return, a shower and rest. A long onward drive or flight can put pressure on the guide to meet a timetable the forest cannot respect. If time is tight, reduce the number of destinations elsewhere in the itinerary.
For a companion who is not trekking, agree a separate plan near the lodge. Forest walks, birding or community visits may need their own guide and fee. Confirm that those activities are available on the day rather than treating them as included substitutes.

Keep the afternoon flexible
Do not promise a fixed return time to another provider. The length of the search and walk can vary, and you may want rest afterwards. Arrange a simple meal and leave any optional second outing flexible so that finishing the trek does not become a race against another booking.
Questions & answers
How long does the whole trek take?
There is no dependable fixed duration. It depends on the gorillas’ location, route, weather and group; keep the day open.
Is a porter compulsory?
Ask the park about the arrangements for your trek. A porter can help with your bag and footing, but fees and services should be confirmed locally.
Can I choose an easy gorilla family?
Explain your needs before allocation, but do not treat a promised short or easy trek as guaranteed.
Can I fly out immediately after tracking?
A same-day flight creates avoidable pressure because the return time is uncertain. Our recommendation is to keep a buffer and leave the following day.
